The Black River Gorges National Park
Mauritius only national park is a spectacular range of wild rainforest of 3.5% of the island and home to over 300 species of flowering plants and nine species of birds unique to Mauritius, including the famous pink pigeon, the staging of returning very gradual extinction.
You can drive or bus stop by the park and the beautiful view on the way (though you will not alone), but the best way to see the park is of course on foot. A network of trails criss-cross the wild and empty Black River Gorges National Park. While the labels have improved in recent years and there are good maps available, you should contact the road and the current state of tracks in the counseling prior to departure. Alternatively, you can make a guide that can be done through the visitor center, will be hired.
The main Visitors Center (9-3pm Mon-Fri 9 clock-4pm Saturday and Sunday) is located at the western entrance of the park, south-east at about 5 km from the Black River. From there, you can just go walk in the park proper. The alternative is the Petrin Information Centre (507 0128 from 8am to 3pm Monday to Friday, 8 am-11am on Saturday) at the entrance of the park. The staff can advise both on different channels and distribute maps very fragmented. They sometimes serve as a guide. You should arrange at least one or two days in advance. Prices start at Rs 1200 per day.
There are many hiking trails, the park and nine of the best forwards and backwards in the official plan in detail. All starting points are clearly identified and are one of the two streets that cross the park to reach. The main road from north to south along the eastern boundary of the park before the Petrin Information Center, then headed west in mares Plaine Champagne. There is a newly built tower of Alexandra Falls, where a panoramic view of the south coast. Sorry, there is no view of the falls themselves, and you have to do with just the sound. Approximately 2 km further west is the point of view of spectacular gorges and views the company of wild apes. After another 10 km of the road descends to the coast at Big Box Noyal.
The second intersection branches Mares The South. After 3km surrounded Bassin Blanc is a crater lake classic wood. Beyond the lake, the road zigzags down to the valley Chamouny and Chemin Grenier.
Arrive at trailhead is difficult without a car. The best option is to take a taxi for you to file and then a bus to pick up at the lower end, the coast road is well covered by buses travel between major cities.
There’s nowhere to buy food or drinks in the park, even in the visitor centers. Be sure to bring plenty of water and increase energy snacks. You also have insect repellent, binoculars for bird watching, rain gear and wet shoes with good traction.
The best time to visit the park during the flowering season from September to January. Find the rare Dodo tambalacoque or a tree, black ebony trees and wild guavas. Bird lovers should keep an eye on the Mauritius kestrel, pink pigeon, echo parakeet and keeping Cuckoo-shrike Mauritius, among other attractions, the park wardens can show some of the most considered likely. For a complete list of hikes can be found in the official map – below are two of our favorites.
